Counter Argument

There are various programs in schools that educate people about the risks of sex and teen pregnancy. There are also centers where teens could get help and educate themselves. Also teens have will. The will to say no to sex because someone has to have told them its bad for them at this point in their lives. However loved ones have bigger impacts on teens. Teachers can't really connect with kids and sit down with each one individually to assist them. It starts from the parents educating and helping their children understand the dangers. Also a teenagers will isn't enough. Peer pressure from friends sometimes overrides that will. they need more support to help them to say no, from parents and loved ones.

Appeal to Pathos, Ethos, and Logos

Pathos: When you a see a teenage girl walking in the streets holding her belly don't think she was a whore. She's crying every night because of whats in her stomach instead of criticizing help put a stop to it happeneing to others.

Ethos: According to the CDC Teenage pregnancies occur mostly because of unguided and mislead teens.

Logos: DeKalb County has a teen pregnancy rate of 75.9 per 1,000 individuals compared to the national rate of 40.5 per 1000. This is one example of how teen pregnancy is more likely to happen in urban areas

Great Debaters & Teen Pregnancy

In the movie, The Great Debaters, A team from Wiley College in the south rose up through their competition to finally become national champions. They had many set backs on the way. My social problem was about teen pregnancy. The Movie did not have Teen pregnancy in it.
I believe this because of when and where the movie takes place. It is in The segregated south. During these times teen pregnancy was very normal. Heck , people even got married at 14 and 15 years old. It was not a big deal at the time and therefore would not be appropriated for the movie. One thing I can compare is when they debated on poverty. Teen mothers are often left as single mothers who are poor. In the movie there was a point made when the only female member on the team stated "How could a mother look in a hungry child's eyes after shes worked in the fields and come back with no food" This quote relates most to my social problem. Teen pregnancy is caused by poor parental guidance and this may keep going from generation to generation unless an outside force intervenes.

Social Problem Thesis

Teen pregnancy has many causes, it is a result of peer pressure, unprotected sex, and very little guidance from loved ones and parents.
